Come see, join the Diversity of Thought Campaign

Editor’s Note: This article was written by diversity committee head and PRSSA at LSU Treasurer Emily Beck.

The PRSSA at LSU Chapter added a diversity committee in Fall 2012 as a way for members to obtain a well-rounded understanding of diversity within a small group of peers. The committee has focused their efforts on writing articles and blog posts regarding various events around the Baton Rouge area, Black History Month and Women’s History Month, as well as hosting a Twitter chat on micro-aggression toward women. For the last couple months, the committee has also been working on their very first campaign, which will address diversity of thought.

Diversity of thought (DOT) is the idea that there is more than one way of thinking or accomplishing tasks and incorporating different ideas, viewpoints and outlooks on a specific subject. The PRSSA at LSU diversity committee decided to take it one step further by focusing on DOT at LSU.

The committee will have table-sits in Free Speech Alley beginning on Monday, April 22 and will include more than simply handing out fliers and preaching about diversity. The members have come up with ideas such as a chalkboard for participants to write their feelings about LSU, a comment box to anonymously tell their fears or secrets at LSU, and photos and videos to be used on the PRSSA at LSU social media accounts such as Twitter, Facebook and the PRSSA at LSU website.

“So many people have a very narrow view on what diversity is. People tend to forget that diversity is more than race and ethnicity. It is important as young, future PR professionals we sure people fully understand and appreciate all aspects of diversity,” says diversity committee member Rowan Knight.

If you are interested in learning more about diversity or helping the committee spread their knowledge, visit the table-sits on Monday, April 22 from 1-2 p.m., Tuesday April 23 from 10-11 a.m. and Wednesday April 24 from 11-12 p.m. Don’t forget to visit the PRSSA at LSU Facebook page and website for more information, as well as following @prssalsu on Twitter using #geauxDOT.
